My name is Penni Wood, and I operate Reach Out Ranch, a small Western riding program in the beautiful Lost Pines area of Bastrop 5 miles from Bastrop State Park off of HWY 21. I focus on safety, helmets are provided, and references are available. Ages 8+.
For intermediate and advanced riders, I take people out to an equestrian park located in Bastrop.
I graduated from UT Austin in 1996 with a degree in Communications—Sciences and Disorders—Deaf Studies. I have been giving riding lessons for over nine years and in that time I have worked with children with differences such as: ADD, ADHD, Bi-polar, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Sensory Defensiveness and Autism. I worked briefly as an assistant guide in a Montessori preschool. My style is to encourage my students to do as much as they can for themselves and when they need help, I am there to help them. My approach to teaching children horseback riding is patient and firm yet fair. The main rule at ROR is we never say "I can't." I promote self-talk that is positive with an attitude of "I can do it." I ask that students problem solve and try for themselves and help them when needed. It is such a joy for both the student and the teacher when the student is able to do the task all by themselves.
