Clean beauty is an ongoing trend and growing category for beauty retailers, and a new docuseries may fuel the demand for clean products even more.
"Not So Pretty" debuts today, April 14th—and it gives HBO Max's subscribers an exclusive look into some of the most controversial ingredients in beauty products. It also features the professional beauty industry's workers who are exposed to them.
Academy Award-nominated filmmakers Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering created the docuseries, and Keke Palmer is the narrator.
Episodes On Makeup, Nails, Skin, & Hair
Each episode focuses on one beauty product category—makeup, nails, skin, and hair. The series seems to spark a conversation around harmful chemicals used or have been found in beauty products—and encourage consumers to do more research.Top controversies include formaldehyde, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and asbestos in cosmetics and personal care products.
Several highly publicized lawsuits are mentioned, including DevaCurl and Johnson & Johnson. (J&J was in hot water twice—over talc when it discontinued its baby powder, and last July, benzene was found in sunscreens.)
The Gender Issue
Gender issues are at play as well. Many black women feel ignored by the haircare industry, even though DevaCurl is one brand specifically for curly and textured hair. But the brand's consumers and influencers say the brand ignored their complaints when they attributed hair loss to the products. A settlement was approved on February 8th, Bloomberg Law reported.
And the possible health issues affecting many Asian women who work in nail salons are often ignored as well.
